The Lord's Prayer, line by line

Jesus' disciples once asked Him a question we still ask: Lord, teach us to pray. He answered with what we now call the Lord's Prayer. Walk it line by line.

Pray each line slowly, then sit with it. Let the prayer pray you.

Our Father in heaven

Begin not with your need but with His name. He is Father — your Father — and He is in heaven, on the throne. Before you ask for anything, remember who you are talking to.

"Father, I come to you as your child. Thank you that I belong to you."

Hallowed be your name

Ask that God's name would be honored — first in your own heart, then in your home, your city, the nations. Hallowing His name reorders your loves.

"Holy Father, be honored in me today. Make me jealous for your glory."

Your kingdom come, your will be done

Pray for God's reign to break in — in your life, in others, in places of injustice and unbelief. Submit your plans to His will.

"King Jesus, come and reign here. Where your will conflicts with mine, change me."

Give us this day our daily bread

Bring God your today — meals, money, work, the people you love. He cares about every need, and He gives daily.

"Father, provide for me and for those I love today. Help me to receive what you give with gratitude."

Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors

Confess the specific things you remember. Name those you need to forgive. Receive grace and extend it.

"Lord Jesus, I confess [name it]. Wash me clean. I forgive [name them] as you have forgiven me."

Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil

Ask the Father to keep you from the places and patterns that pull you under, and to deliver you from the evil one.

"Father, guard my steps today. Deliver me from evil — out there and in here."

For yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever

End where you began — with Him. The kingdom is His. The power is His. The glory belongs to Him forever.

"Yours, Lord — all of it, forever. Amen."
