Historic Christian prayers

A small library of prayers from the wider family of Christ across the centuries.

Pray slowly. Notice the theology. Make them your own.

Augustine (354 – 430)

'You have made us for yourself, O Lord, and our heart is restless until it rests in you.'

Anselm (1033 – 1109)

'Teach me to seek you, and reveal yourself to me when I seek you; for I cannot seek you unless you teach me, nor find you unless you reveal yourself.'

Thomas Cranmer — Collect for Purity

'Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.'

Puritan prayer — from The Valley of Vision

'Lord, high and holy, meek and lowly, you have brought me to the valley of vision, where I live in the depths but see you in the heights; hemmed in by mountains of sin I behold your glory.'

John Wesley's Covenant Prayer

'I am no longer my own, but yours. Put me to what you will, rank me with whom you will… let me be employed for you or laid aside for you, exalted for you or brought low for you… I freely and heartily yield all things to your pleasure and disposal.'
