Work & Vocation

Most Christians spend more waking hours at work than anywhere else, yet many quietly assume God only cares about the Sunday hours. This collection of studies traces work from Eden's garden through the curse in Genesis 3, into the Proverbs' picture of the diligent hand, and forward to Paul's charge to work heartily as unto the Lord (Colossians 3:23). You will study Bezalel and Daniel, the parables of the talents and the shrewd manager, and the New Testament vision of vocation as neighbor-love. Especially valuable for anyone tired of their job, tempted by ambition, wrestling with a career change, or wanting to disciple younger believers about faith at work.

Your work is a calling, not a punishment.

Genesis 1:26-28; Colossians 3:23-24

Why your work matters to God

Work was given before the fall. Image-bearers were made to cultivate, create, and steward. The fall added thorns; it did not abolish the calling.

When you work, you are participating in God's care for the world. Code, lesson plans, balance sheets, diapers — all of it can be worship done unto the Lord.

Proverbs 11:1; Daniel 6

Integrity at work

Daniel kept the books for pagan kings without compromise. His integrity made him both irreplaceable and a target. The faithful presence of a Christian at work is rarely invisible.

Refuse small dishonesties. Speak well of absent colleagues. Do excellent work even when no one is watching.

Exodus 20:8-11; Matthew 11:28-30

Rest as resistance

Sabbath is a weekly declaration that your work does not save you and your output does not define you. To rest is to trust.

Plan it like you plan your work. Protect it. Receive it as gift.
