Bible Answer

What Is the Trinity? The Christian Doctrine of One God in Three Persons

The Trinity is the biblical teaching that the one true God eternally exists as three distinct Persons — Father, Son, and Holy Spirit — who are equal in essence, glory, and power. There is one God, not three; yet the Father is not the Son, the Son is not the Spirit, and the Spirit is not the Father.

Short answer

The Trinity is the biblical teaching that the one true God eternally exists as three distinct Persons — Father, Son, and Holy Spirit — who are equal in essence, glory, and power. There is one God, not three; yet the Father is not the Son, the Son is not the Spirit, and the Spirit is not the Father.

What Scripture says

"Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one."

"Baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit."

"The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all."

"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God."

Going deeper

The doctrine of the Trinity rests on three biblical truths held together: there is only one God; the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are each fully God; and the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are distinct Persons. Drop any of these and you no longer have the Christian God.

The Old Testament insists God is one (Deuteronomy 6:4). The New Testament fully agrees and then reveals that this one God exists as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The Father sends the Son; the Son prays to the Father; the Spirit proceeds from both. They love one another, glorify one another, and act together in creation, salvation, and the life of the church.

The word 'Trinity' is not in the Bible, but the truth of it is everywhere — most clearly at the baptism of Jesus, where the Father speaks from heaven, the Son comes up from the water, and the Spirit descends like a dove (Matthew 3:16-17). Jesus commands baptism in the singular 'name' of all three (Matthew 28:19).

The Trinity is not a problem to solve but a glory to worship. It tells us that God has always been a community of love — Father, Son, and Spirit eternally loving one another — and that He has invited us, through Jesus, into that love. Christianity stands or falls with this truth.

A prayer

Triune God — Father, Son, and Holy Spirit — I worship You. Thank You for revealing Yourself as one God in three Persons, a perfect community of love. Draw me into Your fellowship through Jesus Christ. Amen.
