Bible Answer

Who Is the Holy Spirit? The Third Person of the Trinity Explained

The Holy Spirit is the third Person of the Trinity — fully and equally God with the Father and the Son. He convicts the world of sin, regenerates believers, lives in every Christian, applies the work of Christ to us, produces Christlike character, and empowers the church for mission.

Short answer

The Holy Spirit is the third Person of the Trinity — fully and equally God with the Father and the Son. He convicts the world of sin, regenerates believers, lives in every Christian, applies the work of Christ to us, produces Christlike character, and empowers the church for mission.

What Scripture says

"But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you."

"You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you... He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you."

"But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control."

"You will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses."

Going deeper

The Holy Spirit is not a force, an influence, or an 'it.' He is a Person — He speaks, teaches, intercedes, loves, can be grieved, and is described with personal pronouns. He is also fully God, sharing the divine name and nature with the Father and the Son.

The Spirit's first work in our lives is conviction (John 16:8) — making us aware of our sin and need for Christ. He then regenerates us (gives new birth), unites us to Jesus by faith, and comes to live inside every believer. From that moment on, He is the abiding presence of God in us.

The Holy Spirit grows us into the likeness of Christ. He produces His fruit — love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control (Galatians 5:22-23). He gives gifts to every believer for the building up of the church and empowers us to bear witness to Jesus everywhere.

Walking in the Spirit is not a higher-level Christian life but the normal one. Every believer has the Spirit; the call is to keep in step with Him — yielding to His leading, obeying His promptings in Scripture, and depending on His power. Without Him, there is no Christian life at all.
