Short answer

The gospel ('good news') is the message that Jesus Christ, God's Son, lived a perfect life, died on the cross to pay for the sins of His people, and rose bodily from the grave. All who repent and believe in Him are forgiven, declared righteous, and given eternal life with God.

What Scripture says

"For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures."

"I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes."

"For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God."

"The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel."

Going deeper

The word 'gospel' means good news — and the news is about a Person, not a program. The gospel is the announcement that God has done in Jesus Christ what we could never do for ourselves. It is the central message of the Bible and the foundation of the Christian faith.

The gospel begins with God: holy, loving, and the rightful King of His creation. It tells the truth about us: we have rebelled against Him, and that rebellion (sin) brings spiritual death and judgment. We cannot earn our way back. Then it announces Jesus: the eternal Son of God who became fully human, lived without sin, died on a Roman cross in our place, and rose physically from the grave on the third day.

Because of His death and resurrection, all who repent of sin and trust in Christ alone are forgiven, brought into a restored relationship with God, indwelt by the Holy Spirit, adopted into His family, and promised eternal life. The gospel is not 'try harder' or 'be a better person.' It is 'Jesus has done it; trust Him.'

The gospel is also the power for the entire Christian life. We are not saved by the gospel and then sanctified by our own effort — we grow by continually returning to the cross, resting in Christ's finished work, and being shaped by the Spirit. The good news is good every day.

Key takeaways

  • The gospel is news, not advice — what Jesus has accomplished for sinners.
  • It centers on Christ's substitutionary death and bodily resurrection.
  • It is received by repentance and faith, not earned by works.
  • The gospel saves, sanctifies, and sustains every believer.
  • Sharing the gospel is the privilege and mission of every Christian.

A prayer

Father, thank You for the good news of Jesus. Thank You that He lived the life I could not live and died the death I deserved. Help me to believe this gospel deeply, live by it daily, and share it boldly with others. In Jesus' name, amen.
