Short answer
Heaven is the eternal presence of God where His people enjoy Him forever. The Bible's final picture is not believers floating in clouds but a renewed creation — a new heaven and new earth — where God dwells with His people, all things are made new, and sin, sorrow, and death are gone forever.
What Scripture says
"Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people... He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore."
"What no eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the heart of man imagined, what God has prepared for those who love him."
"To depart and be with Christ, for that is far better."
"They will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads."
Going deeper
The Bible's picture of heaven is far better and more concrete than popular imagination. Heaven is not endless boredom or a disembodied existence. At its heart, heaven is being with God — seeing Christ face to face, freed from sin, fully alive. Paul calls being with Christ 'far better' than anything in this life.
When believers die, they are immediately present with the Lord (2 Corinthians 5:8). But the Bible's ultimate hope is not just souls going up but Jesus coming down. At His return, He will raise His people in glorified bodies and renew heaven and earth into one perfect dwelling place — the New Jerusalem, where God lives with His people forever.
In that new creation, every effect of the fall is reversed. No more sickness, sorrow, sin, or death. No more striving for meaning. Work without frustration, worship without distraction, relationships without pain, and unceasing joy in God Himself. Revelation pictures it as a city, a garden, a wedding feast — overflowing categories of beauty.
Most of all, heaven is glorious because God is there. We will see Him as He is, know Him fully, and reflect His glory. Everything good in this life is a foretaste; everything painful is being undone. For those in Christ, the best is always yet to come.
