Short answer
The Book of Jude is a short letter in the New Testament written to warn Christians about false teachers. Jude urges believers to defend the true faith and stay close to God. He explains that God will judge those who lead others away, but He will keep His faithful children safe forever.
The Book of Jude is one of the shortest books in the Bible. It is a letter found right before the Book of Revelation. Even though it is small, it has a very strong message about staying true to what the Bible teaches.
Jude was a brother of James and a half-brother of Jesus. He wanted to write about the joy of being saved. Instead, he felt he had to warn his friends about people who were sneaking into the church to teach lies.
Verses to read
“Beloved, while I was very eager to write to you about our common salvation, I was constrained to write to you exhorting you to contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints.”
“Now to him who is able to keep them from stumbling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory in great joy.”
Who wrote the Book of Jude?
The author calls himself Jude. He says he is a servant of Jesus Christ and a brother of James. Most Bible scholars believe this Jude was the half-brother of Jesus. At first, Jesus' brothers did not believe in Him, but they changed after He rose from the dead.
Jude does not call himself an apostle. An apostle was a special leader chosen by Jesus. Instead, he humbly calls himself a servant. He wrote this letter to all Christians who are loved by God the Father.
Why was the letter written?
Jude wrote this letter because he was worried. Some people had joined the church and were teaching things that were not true. These false teachers said that because God is kind, people could sin all they wanted. Jude knew this was a dangerous lie.
He told the believers they must "contend" for the faith. To contend means to work hard to protect something. Jude wanted them to fight for the truth of the Gospel. The Gospel is the good news that Jesus saves us from sin.
How does Jude describe false teachers?
Jude uses many pictures from nature to describe these teachers. He calls them clouds without rain and trees without fruit. This means they look important on the outside, but they have nothing good to give on the inside.
He also reminds his readers of history. He talks about people in the Old Testament who disobeyed God and were punished. Jude wanted everyone to know that God sees what people do. Those who try to ruin the church will face God's judgment.
How can we stay strong in faith?
In the last part of the letter, Jude tells Christians how to stay safe. He says they should pray and remember what the apostles taught. He tells them to keep themselves in the love of God while they wait for Jesus to return.
Jude also tells them to be kind to others. Some people might have doubts because of the false teachers. Jude says to show mercy to those people and help lead them back to the truth.

Common questions
- Is Jude the same person as Judas Iscariot?
- No, this Jude is not the man who betrayed Jesus. This Jude was a faithful follower and a brother of James.
- What does it mean to contend for the faith?
- It means to stand up for the truth of the Bible. We do this by learning what God says and not believing lies about Him.
- Why does Jude talk about angels and old stories?
- Jude used stories the people already knew to show that God has always punished those who rebel against Him. This proved his warnings were serious.
- How does the Book of Jude end?
- It ends with a beautiful prayer of praise. It reminds us that God is powerful enough to keep us from making mistakes and will bring us to heaven with joy.
