Short answer
The book of Zechariah is a collection of visions and messages from a prophet named Zechariah. He encouraged the Israelites to finish rebuilding God's temple after they returned from exile. The book explains that God will live with his people again and promises a future King who will save the world.
Zechariah was a priest and a prophet who lived a long time ago. He spoke to the Jewish people after they came back to their home in Jerusalem. They had been prisoners in a land called Babylon for seventy years. Now they were free, but they were tired and sad.
God gave Zechariah special dreams called visions. These dreams showed that God had not forgotten his people. The book is divided into two parts. The first part is about building the temple. The second part is about a great King who would come to rule with peace.
Verses to read
“Therefore tell them, 'Yahweh of Armies says: "Return to me," says Yahweh of Armies, "and I will return to you," says Yahweh of Armies.'”
“Rejoice greatly, daughter of Zion! Shout, daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your King comes to you! He is righteous, and having salvation; lowly, and riding on a donkey, even on a colt, the foal of a donkey.”
What are the eight night visions?
In the beginning of the book, Zechariah sees eight strange dreams in one night. These dreams use symbols like horses, measuring lines, and flying scrolls. Each dream has a special meaning from God.
These visions told the people that God was watching over them. He promised to punish the bad nations and help the Israelites finish building the temple. The visions showed that God wanted his people to be holy and clean from sin.
Why was the temple important?
The temple was the place where God’s presence lived on earth. The people had started building it, but they stopped because they were scared of their neighbors. Zechariah told them to keep working.
He said that the work would not be finished by human power or strength. Instead, it would be finished by God’s Spirit. This taught the people to trust God instead of their own muscles.
Who is the promised King?
The second half of the book looks far into the future. Zechariah talks about a coming King. This King would not be a mean soldier. He would be humble and ride on a young donkey.
Christians believe this King is Jesus. The Bible shows that Jesus entered Jerusalem on a donkey just like Zechariah said. Zechariah also said the King would be pierced and would save people from their sins.
What does the book teach us today?
Zechariah teaches us that God wants to be close to us. Even when things look bad, God is still in control of history. He wants us to be fair to others and show mercy.
The book ends with a picture of the whole world worshiping God. It reminds us that one day, everything will be made right. God will be the King over all the earth, and there will be no more darkness.
