Short answer
The Book of Zechariah is a message of hope found in the Old Testament. The prophet Zechariah encourages the people of Israel to finish rebuilding God’s temple. He describes eight symbolic visions and predicts the coming of a humble King, Jesus, who will bring peace to the whole world.
The Book of Zechariah was written a long time ago for people who felt discouraged. They had just returned home after being prisoners in a foreign land. They started to build God’s house, the temple, but they had stopped working because life was hard.
Zechariah told them that God had not forgotten them. He used strange dreams and clear promises to show that God was still in control. This book helps us see how much God cares about his people and his plans for the future.
Verses to read
“Rejoice greatly, daughter of Zion! Shout, daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your King comes to you! He is righteous, and having salvation; lowly, and riding on a donkey, even on a colt, the foal of a donkey.”
“Then he answered and spoke to me, saying, 'This is Yahweh’s word to Zerubbabel, saying: "Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit," says Yahweh of Armies.'”
What are the eight night visions?
In the first part of the book, Zechariah sees eight special dreams in one night. These are called visions. In these visions, he sees things like colorful horses, golden lampstands, and flying scrolls. These pictures were messages from God.
Each vision told the people that God was watching over them. He promised to protect Jerusalem and punish the nations that were mean to them. These dreams gave the people the courage they needed to start building the temple again.
Why is the temple so important?
The temple was the place where God’s presence lived among his people. When the people stopped building it, they were showing that they didn't put God first. Zechariah told their leader, Zerubbabel, that he would finish the work.
God told them that success does not come from human strength or weapons. It comes from God’s Spirit. This reminded the people that they could do hard things if they trusted God to help them.
What does Zechariah say about the coming King?
The middle and end of the book talk about a special King who would come later. Zechariah said this King would be humble. Instead of riding a big war horse, he would ride a young donkey. This was a prophecy about Jesus.
A prophecy is a message from God about what will happen in the future. Zechariah even predicted that this King would be betrayed for thirty pieces of silver. These details came true many years later when Jesus lived on earth.
How does the book end?
The final chapters look far into the future. They describe a time when God will heal his people and stop all wars. It pictures a world where everyone knows God and lives in peace.
Zechariah promises that God will be King over all the earth. The book ends with a feeling of great victory. It teaches us that even when things look bad, God is working to make everything right in the end.
