Short answer
The Book of Nehemiah tells the story of a man who led the Jewish people to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem. Nehemiah was a cupbearer for a king who returned to his home to fix the city. The book shows how God helps people finish hard work even when others try to stop them.
The Book of Nehemiah is found in the Old Testament of the Bible. It tells us what happened after the Jewish people were allowed to go back to their land. Before this, they had been forced to live far away in a place called Babylon.
Nehemiah was a leader who cared about his people and his city. He did not just want to fix the walls of the city. He also wanted to help the people follow God’s laws again.
Verses to read
“Then I said to them, 'You see the bad situation that we are in, how Jerusalem lies waste, and its gates are burned with fire. Come, let’s build up the wall of Jerusalem, that we won’t be a reproach anymore.'”
“So the wall was finished in the twenty-fifth day of the month Elul, in fifty-two days.”
“They read in the book, in the law of God, distinctly; and they gave the sense, so that they understood the reading.”
Who Was Nehemiah?
Nehemiah was a servant to King Artaxerxes of Persia. His job was to be the king’s cupbearer. This means he tasted the king's drinks to make sure they were safe. He had a good job, but his heart was sad for his home city.
One day, Nehemiah heard that the walls of Jerusalem were broken and the gates were burned. He cried and prayed to God for many days. The king saw his sadness and let him go back to Jerusalem to fix the city.
How the Wall Was Rebuilt
When Nehemiah arrived in Jerusalem, he looked at the damage at night. He told the people it was time to rebuild. Everyone worked together. Families worked on the parts of the wall near their own houses.
The work was not easy. Some enemies tried to scare them and stop the work. Nehemiah told the workers to hold a tool in one hand and a sword in the other. Because they stayed focused and prayed, they finished the wall in only 52 days.
Ezra Reads the Law
After the walls were done, the people gathered together. A priest named Ezra brought out the Book of the Law. This book contained the rules God gave to His people a long time ago. Ezra read the book out loud from morning until noon.
The people listened carefully. They realized they had not been following God's ways. They cried because they were sorry, but Nehemiah told them to be happy. He said the joy of the Lord was their strength.
The People Make a Promise
The book ends with the people making a new promise to God. They promised to stop doing things that displeased Him. They said they would take care of God’s house and give back to Him.
Nehemiah also helped the poor people. Some rich leaders were being mean to the poor. Nehemiah made them stop and return what they had taken. He wanted the whole city to be fair and holy.
