Short answer
The Book of Job tells the story of a good man who loses everything. Job loses his wealth, his children, and his health. Even though he is sad and confused, he stays faithful to God. In the end, God talks to Job and gives him back twice as much as he had before.
The Book of Job is a famous part of the Bible. It asks why bad things happen to good people. Job was a very rich man who loved God. One day, he lost his farm, his house, and all ten of his children. Then he got very sick with sores all over his skin.
Job did not know why this was happening. He spent a long time talking to his friends about God. This story teaches us that God is in control even when life feels very hard and unfair.
Verses to read
Why did Job suffer?
The book starts with a meeting in heaven. Satan told God that Job only loved Him because Job was rich and happy. Satan said if Job lost everything, he would hate God. God allowed Satan to test Job's faith.
Job did not know about this test. He only knew that his world had fallen apart. Even when he was hurting, Job refused to turn his back on God. He showed that his love for God was real, not just for the gifts God gave him.
What did Job's friends say?
Three friends came to sit with Job. At first, they were quiet and kind. But then they started to argue with him. They told Job he must have done something very bad. They thought God only lets bad things happen to bad people.
Job told them they were wrong. He knew he had lived a good life. He felt frustrated because he wanted to ask God for an explanation. The friends kept blaming Job, but they did not understand God’s big plan.
How did God answer Job?
After a long time, God spoke to Job from a great wind. God did not explain why the bad things happened. Instead, God asked Job questions about the stars, the ocean, and the animals. He showed Job how big and wise He is.
Job realized that humans cannot understand everything God does. He saw that God is much greater than any problem. Job stopped complaining and put his trust in God's power and love.
How does the story end?
God was happy that Job stayed faithful. He told Job’s friends they were wrong about why people suffer. God told Job to pray for his friends, and Job obeyed.
God then gave Job a new family and more wealth than he had at the start. Job lived a long, happy life. The story ends by showing that God cares for His people even in the middle of their pain.
