Short answer
The Book of Job is a story about a good man who loses everything. Job loses his wealth, his children, and his health. Even though he is sad and confused, he stays faithful to God. In the end, God talks to Job and gives him back twice as much as he had before.
The Book of Job is a famous part of the Bible. It asks one big question: Why do bad things happen to good people? Job was a man who loved God very much. He was very rich and had a big, happy family.
One day, everything went wrong for Job. He lost his money and his children died in a storm. Then, he got very sick with painful sores. This story shows us how Job talked to God when life was very hard.
Verses to read
Why did Job suffer?
The book starts with a meeting in heaven. A being called the Adversary, or Satan, says Job only loves God because God protects him. He tells God that if Job loses his things, Job will stop loving God.
God lets the Adversary take away Job's wealth and family to prove Job is truly faithful. Job is very sad, but he does not curse God. He shows that his love for God is not just about getting good things.
What did Job's friends say?
Three friends come to sit with Job. At first, they are quiet and sad with him. But then, they start to give him advice. They tell Job he must have done something very bad. They think God only punishes people who sin.
Job tells them they are wrong. He knows he has lived a good life. He argues with them because he does not understand why he is hurting if he did nothing wrong. This takes up most of the book.
God speaks to Job
Finally, God speaks to Job out of a great wind. God does not explain exactly why Job suffered. Instead, God asks Job many questions about the world. He asks Job if he knows how the stars were made or where the snow comes from.
God shows Job that humans cannot understand everything God does. God is much bigger and wiser than we are. Job realizes he should trust God even when he does not have all the answers.
How the story ends
In the end, God is happy with Job because Job was honest and faithful. God tells the friends they were wrong about Job. Job prays for his friends, and God heals him.
God gives Job a new family and twice as much wealth as he had at the start. The story ends with Job living a long, happy life. It teaches us that God is in control and we can trust Him during hard times.
