Overview of the Book of Leviticus

Learn what the book of Leviticus is about. Discover how God taught his people to be holy and stay close to him through laws and worship.

Short answer

The book of Leviticus is the third book of the Bible. It is a guide for how the people of Israel could live near a holy God. It explains rules for worship, sacrifices, and daily life to help people stay clean and follow God’s ways faithfully.

Leviticus is a book found in the Old Testament. It was written for the Israelites after they left Egypt. At this time, God lived among them in a special tent called the Tabernacle. Because God is perfect and holy, the people needed to know how to act when they were near him.

The word Leviticus comes from the name Levi. The Levites were a special group of people chosen to be helpers for God. This book contains the rules and laws God gave to them and all of Israel so they could stay in a good relationship with him.

Verses to read

  • “Speak to all the congregation of the children of Israel, and tell them, 'You shall be holy; for I, Yahweh your God, am holy.'”

    Leviticus 19:2

  • “You shall be holy to me; for I, Yahweh, am holy, and have set you apart from the peoples, that you should be mine.”

    Leviticus 20:26

What is the main theme of Leviticus?

The main theme of Leviticus is holiness. To be holy means to be set apart or pure. God is perfectly good and without sin. He wanted his people to reflect his goodness in the way they lived and talked.

God gave the people laws to follow so they would be different from other nations. These laws showed them how to be clean and how to show respect to God. By following these rules, the people could live safely in God's presence.

Why did the people offer sacrifices?

In Leviticus, God explains five different types of sacrifices or offerings. Some were to say thank you to God. Others were to ask for forgiveness when someone did something wrong. Sin is when we disobey God, and it creates a gap between us and him.

When a person sinned, they brought an animal to the priest. The animal took the place of the person. This reminded the people that sin is serious. It also showed them that God provides a way for their sins to be covered so they can be friends with him again.

What are the rules for clean and unclean?

Leviticus has many rules about what people could eat and how they should wash. Some animals were called clean, and others were called unclean. These rules were not just about health. They were symbols to teach the people about purity.

If someone became unclean, they had to wait and wash before they could go to the Tabernacle to worship. This taught the people that they must prepare their hearts and bodies before coming close to a holy God.

What were the special feasts and holidays?

God told the people to celebrate special days throughout the year. One of the most important days was the Day of Atonement. On this day, the High Priest would offer a sacrifice for the sins of the whole nation to make things right with God.

Other feasts, like Passover and the Feast of Booths, were times for the people to remember how God saved them and provided food for them. These celebrations helped the people stay thankful and focused on God’s promises.

How does Leviticus point to Jesus?

For Christians, the laws in Leviticus help us understand what Jesus did. The Bible says that Jesus is the perfect sacrifice. In the old days, people had to offer animals over and over again. But Jesus gave his life once to pay for all sins forever.

Jesus is also called our High Priest. Because of him, we do not have to follow all the old rules about food or washing to be close to God. Jesus makes our hearts clean so we can talk to God anytime.

Remember this

  • Leviticus is about how to live near a holy God.
  • Holiness means being pure and set apart for God.
  • Sacrifices were used to ask God for forgiveness.
  • The book contains laws for food, health, and worship.
  • Jesus fulfilled these laws by being the perfect sacrifice.

Common questions

Most Bible scholars believe Moses wrote Leviticus. The book begins with God speaking to Moses from the Tabernacle to give him these laws for the people.
Do Christians still have to follow Leviticus laws today?
Christians do not have to follow the rules about food or animal sacrifices. Jesus fulfilled those laws, but the moral lessons about loving God and being holy are still important.

Atonement means making things right between two parties. In the Bible, it refers to the way God removes sin so that people can be at one with him again.
