Short answer
The Book of Matthew is the first book of the New Testament. It tells the story of Jesus Christ’s life, death, and resurrection. Matthew wrote this book to show that Jesus is the promised King and Savior. It focuses on Jesus teaching about the Kingdom of Heaven and his love for all people.
The Book of Matthew is like a bridge. It connects the Old Testament promises about a coming King to the life of Jesus. It is the first of four books called Gospels. Gospel means good news.
Matthew was a tax collector who became one of Jesus’ twelve disciples. He saw Jesus do miracles and heard him teach. He wrote this book so everyone would know that Jesus is the Son of God.
Verses to read
“She shall give birth to a son. You shall call his name Jesus, for it is he who will save his people from their sins.”
“Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.”
Who is Jesus in the Book of Matthew?
Matthew starts by listing the family members of Jesus. This list shows that Jesus came from the family of King David. Long ago, God promised that a great King would come from David’s line. Matthew wants us to see that Jesus is that King.
He also calls Jesus the Messiah. Messiah is a word that means the Anointed One or the Chosen One. The whole book shows how Jesus did exactly what the prophets said the Savior would do.
What did Jesus teach his followers?
This book has five big sections of teaching. The most famous one is called the Sermon on the Mount. In these chapters, Jesus explains how people in God’s kingdom should live. He tells them to be kind, to pray, and to love their enemies.
Jesus used stories called parables to teach. These are simple stories that have a deep spiritual meaning. He taught that God’s kingdom is not a place on a map, but God’s rule in our hearts.
How does the book end?
The end of Matthew tells how Jesus died on a cross and rose again three days later. This is the most important part of the story. By dying, Jesus took the punishment for the bad things people do. By rising again, he showed he has power over death.
Before Jesus went back to heaven, he gave his followers a big job. This is called the Great Commission. He told them to go into all the world and tell everyone the good news about him.
Why is this book important for us?
Matthew shows us that God keeps his promises. Even when things seem hard, God has a plan. Jesus is the King who cares for the poor, the sick, and the lonely.
Reading Matthew helps us know Jesus better. It shows us how to follow him every day. It reminds us that Jesus is always with us, even until the end of time.
