Short answer
The Book of Zechariah is a book of prophecy in the Old Testament. It was written to encourage God’s people to finish rebuilding the Temple in Jerusalem. The book contains strange visions, calls for holy living, and famous promises about a coming King who would save his people.
The Book of Zechariah is found near the end of the Old Testament. It was written by a prophet named Zechariah. A prophet is someone who gives special messages from God to the people.
At this time, the Jewish people had just returned home after being prisoners in a far land. They were tired and sad. Zechariah wrote this book to give them hope and to tell them that God had not forgotten them.
Verses to read
“Therefore tell them, 'Yahweh of Armies says: "Return to me," says Yahweh of Armies, "and I will return to you," says Yahweh of Armies.'”
“Rejoice greatly, daughter of Zion! Shout, daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your King comes to you! He is righteous, and having salvation; lowly, and riding on a donkey, even on a colt, the foal of a donkey.”
Why did Zechariah write this book?
The people of Israel had stopped building God's Temple. They were focused on their own houses and felt discouraged by their enemies. God sent Zechariah to tell them to get back to work.
God wanted the people to know that He was still with them. He promised that if they turned back to Him, He would bless them and stay close to them.
The eight night visions
In the first part of the book, Zechariah sees eight strange dreams or visions in one night. These visions use symbols like colorful horses, measuring lines, and flying scrolls. Symbols are pictures that stand for a deeper meaning.
These visions showed that God was watching the whole world. He promised to punish the people who were mean to Israel and to make Jerusalem a safe place to live again.
A promise of the coming King
Zechariah talks a lot about a special King who would come in the future. Christians believe these parts of the book are about Jesus. Zechariah said this King would be humble and would ride into the city on a young donkey.
He also wrote that this King would be a priest. In the Bible, a priest is someone who helps people talk to God. This King would bring peace to all the nations on earth.
Cleansing and a bright future
The end of the book looks forward to a time when God will fix everything that is broken. God promised to wash away the sins of His people. Sin is when people do things that break God's rules.
Zechariah describes a day when everyone will worship God. There will be no more war or sadness. God will be the King over all the earth, and everything will be holy and good.
