Bible Study on Haggai: Finish the Work

Learn about the Book of Haggai. Discover how God encouraged His people to finish building the temple and put Him first in their lives.

Short answer

A Bible study on Haggai focuses on putting God first. Haggai was a prophet who told the Israelites to finish rebuilding God’s temple. He taught that when we prioritize God’s work, He provides for us. The book shows how God’s presence brings true peace and blessing to His people.

The Book of Haggai is a short but powerful book in the Old Testament. It was written at a time when God’s people had stopped working on the temple. They were busy building their own nice houses instead. God sent the prophet Haggai to remind them what matters most.

Haggai is the second shortest book in the Bible. Even though it is small, it has a big message. It teaches us about obedience, courage, and how God stays with us when we do His work.

Verses to read

  • “Is it a time for you yourselves to dwell in your paneled houses, while this house lies waste?”

    Haggai 1:4

  • “Yet now be strong, Zerubbabel, says Yahweh. Be strong, Joshua, son of Jehozadak, the high priest. Be strong, all you people of the land, says Yahweh, and work, for I am with you, says Yahweh of Armies.”

    Haggai 2:4

Why did Haggai give his message?

The Israelites had returned home from being prisoners in another land. They started to build God’s temple, but they got scared and stopped. For sixteen years, the temple sat in ruins. The people were more worried about their own comfort than God's house.

God sent Haggai to wake them up. He asked them why they lived in nice houses while His house was broken. He wanted them to see that their souls were empty because they had pushed God to the side.

What happens when we ignore God?

Haggai told the people to look at their lives. They were planting seeds but not growing much food. They were eating but still hungry. They were making money, but it felt like their pockets had holes in them.

This happened because they were not putting God first. When we try to find happiness without God, things never seem to be enough. God used these hard times to draw the people back to Him.

How did the people respond?

Sometimes in the Bible, people do not listen to prophets. But in this book, the leaders and the people listened right away. They felt a holy fear and respect for God. They decided to start building the temple again.

God gave them a wonderful promise as soon as they started. He said, 'I am with you.' This is the best news anyone can hear. We do not have to be strong on our own because God is by our side.

The promise of future glory

Some of the older people were sad. They remembered the first temple and thought this new one looked small and plain. Haggai told them not to worry. He said God would fill this new house with even greater glory.

This points forward to Jesus. God’s glory is not about gold or big stones. It is about His presence among His people. God promised that in this place, He would give peace to everyone.

Remember this

  • God wants to be first in our lives.
  • Ignoring God leads to empty results.
  • Obedience brings God's blessing and peace.
  • God stays with us while we work.
  • True glory comes from God's presence.
