Bible Project 1 Kings: Summary and Key Themes

Learn about the book of 1 Kings. See how King Solomon led Israel and why the kingdom split into two parts.

Short answer

The book of 1 Kings tells the story of Israel after King David died. It begins with King Solomon building a beautiful temple for God. Later, the nation splits into two kingdoms because the leaders turned away from God. It also introduces great prophets like Elijah who called people back to the truth.

The book of 1 Kings starts with a time of great hope. King David’s son, Solomon, becomes the new king. He is very wise and builds a special house for God called the Temple. During this time, the people are happy and the nation is strong.

However, things change quickly. Solomon and the kings who follow him start to make bad choices. They stop listening to God and start worshiping fake gods. This causes the country to break apart, leading to many years of trouble and war.

Verses to read

  • “Give your servant therefore an understanding heart to judge your people, that I may discern between good and evil; for who is able to judge this your great people?”

    1 Kings 3:9

  • “As for you, if you will walk before me, as David your father walked, in integrity of heart, and in uprightness, to do according to all that I have commanded you, and will keep my statutes and my ordinances.”

    1 Kings 9:4

What is the main story of 1 Kings?

The book of 1 Kings follows the history of Israel’s royalty. It starts with Solomon, who asks God for wisdom instead of money or power. God is pleased and makes him the wisest man on earth. Solomon uses this wisdom to lead the people and build a home for God’s presence.

But as Solomon grows older, he marries many women from other nations. These women worship other gods, and Solomon begins to follow them. Because he was not faithful, God warns that the kingdom will be taken away from his family.

Why did the kingdom of Israel split?

After Solomon died, his son Rehoboam became king. He was not wise like his father. He treated the people harshly and made them work too hard. Most of the tribes of Israel decided they did not want him as their leader anymore.

Ten tribes broke away to form the Northern Kingdom, called Israel. Only two tribes stayed with Rehoboam in the Southern Kingdom, called Judah. This split made the nation weak and led to many fights between brothers.

Who were the prophets in 1 Kings?

Since the kings were doing a bad job, God sent prophets. A prophet is a messenger who tells people what God is saying. The most famous prophet in this book is Elijah. He lived during a time when a very bad king named Ahab was in charge.

Elijah performed miracles to show that the Lord is the one true God. He even challenged the fake prophets of a god named Baal to a contest with fire. God sent fire from heaven to show He was real. This was meant to help the people turn back to God.

What does 1 Kings teach us today?

This book shows that our choices matter. When the leaders followed God, the people were safe and blessed. When they ignored God’s rules, everyone suffered. It reminds us that even very wise people like Solomon can fail if they stop focusing on God.

It also shows that God is patient. Even when the kings were bad, God kept sending prophets to help them. He never stopped caring for His people, even when they were lost. He always provides a way for people to come back to Him.

Remember this

  • Solomon asks God for wisdom.
  • The Temple is built in Jerusalem.
  • Israel splits into two separate kingdoms.
  • King Ahab leads the people into sin.
  • Elijah the prophet defends the truth.

Common questions

Who wrote the book of 1 Kings?
The Bible does not state the name of the author. Many people believe the prophet Jeremiah or a group of writers put these records together during the time of the exile.
What is the difference between Israel and Judah?
After the split, Israel refers to the ten tribes in the north. Judah refers to the two tribes in the south where the city of Jerusalem and the Temple were located.
Why did Solomon have so many wives?
In ancient times, kings married princesses from other countries to make peace treaties. Solomon did this many times, but it led him to worship the gods of those other nations.

A prayer
