Short answer
The Book of Judges tells the story of Israel after they entered the Promised Land but before they had kings. It shows a cycle where the people disobeyed God, faced trouble, and then cried out for help. God sent leaders called judges to rescue them and bring peace for a short time.
The Book of Judges is the seventh book in the Bible. It covers a time when the people of Israel lived in their new land but did not have a single king to lead them. Instead, they had local leaders who helped them in times of war.
This book shows how God stays faithful even when His people fail. It describes a long period of history filled with brave heroes and very sad mistakes. By reading it, we see that people need God to guide their hearts every day.
Verses to read
“When Yahweh raised up judges for them, then Yahweh was with the judge, and saved them out of the hand of their enemies all the days of the judge; for Yahweh was moved to pity by their groaning by reason of those who oppressed them and troubled them.”
“In those days there was no king in Israel. Every man did that which was right in his own eyes.”
What is a judge in the Bible?
In this book, a judge is not someone who sits in a courtroom wearing a black robe. Instead, a judge was a military leader or a hero. God chose these men and women to lead the people and save them from enemies who were attacking them.
These judges were not perfect people. Some were very brave, while others made big mistakes. However, God used them to protect the nation of Israel and remind the people to follow His laws.
The cycle of falling away
The Book of Judges follows a pattern that repeats over and over. First, the people would forget God and start worshiping false idols. Because they turned away, God allowed their enemies to defeat them and treat them badly.
After suffering for a long time, the people would cry out to God for help. God would hear them and send a judge to rescue them. The land would have peace as long as that judge was alive, but as soon as the judge died, the people would go back to their bad habits again.
Famous leaders in Judges
There are many famous stories in this book. One story is about Deborah, a wise woman who helped lead an army to victory. Another story is about Gideon, a man who defeated a huge army with only 300 soldiers and some clay jars.
You may also know the story of Samson. He was given super strength by God to fight the Philistines. Even though Samson made many poor choices, God used his strength at the very end of his life to help the people.
Why the book ends sadly
The end of the book shows that the people were becoming more and more sinful. The stories get darker and show how much trouble happens when people stop following God’s rules. It describes a time of great confusion and mean behavior.
The very last verse says that everyone did whatever they thought was right. This tells us that without a good leader and a heart for God, people easily lose their way. It sets the stage for the next books where Israel asks for a king.
